“Goodness Culture: Life Ideologies from Batik” is a collaboration between SERRUM and ARCOLABS, introducing batik as a prominent Indonesian cultural heritage to Korean audience. Known as the soul of Indonesia, batik has been designated as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in UNESCO. The word “batik” is a combination of ‘ba’, which means cloth, and ‘tik’ which means to draw a dot. It is a traditional wax dyeing technique or fabric made using this technique. Hosted by Little Farmers, a leading sustainable lifestyle company in Korea, the program consists of a series of batik workshops (April 18-21) and a media art exhibition (April 23-30).

The batik workshops are designed to offer a unique experience of Indonesian traditional culture to various groups of participants such as designers, artists, students and general public. Led by Jogja-based batik artisan Remigius Tunggal Nugroho, the founder of Wastra Tunggal, the workshops will provide two different levels of programs. For art professionals and general public

The media art exhibition features two artists from Indonesia and Korea. The former will present a video installation in Non Gallery while the latter will showcase a work in Bat Gallery responding to some Indonesian traditional sounds. Ricky “Babay” Janitra is an Indonesian young artist well known for his video mapping. In this exhibition, he will re-create Indonesian traditional batik pattern into digital animation. By doing this, he will provide the audience with a spatial experience of the illusion of being inside of batik patterns. Korean artist Park Seung Soon is a new wave musician. In this exhibition, he will present a sound installation consisting of several glass bowls of water. Each bowl is mapped with various traditional Indonesian music that will resonate when the water is touched by the audience. This artwork will provide an aqua symphony experience.

Inspired by batik patterns, “Goodness Culture: Life Ideologies from Batik” will encourage a dynamic blend between traditional and contemporary art, and also promote the essential communication between cultures.
