The effects of migration on an individual’s identity is the basis of Aliansyah Caniago’s work in his solo exhibition in Jakarta. The young artist works with performance art, installation, and painting as his medium. Aliansyah was the winner of several competitions, including the Bandung Contemporary Art Award and the Indonesian Art Award. Today, his works are part of the collection of well-known art institutions such as the Singapore Art Museum (Singapore), Fundación Botín (Spain), and Galeri Nasional (Indonesia).

Aliansyah undertakes several local areas to be surveyed, including Pondok Indah, Bukit Duri, and Kemayoran; the artist would explore each of these selected areas for a period of time. Aliansyah utilizes a pigeon bird to mobilize his observation process. The culmination of his process would come together in a fictional, experimental artistic work regarding the effects of mobility on identity, all of which would be created over a period of ten days. The end of Aliansyah’s research period comes in form of an exhibition comprising of performance art and fine art at Space: Gallery + Workshop, run by ARCOLABS Jakarta.

Through this exhibition, ARCOLABS hopes to echo the spirit and integrity of young artist to create his individual artistic journey through choice of medium and subject matter. At the height of the global migration phenomenon, this exhibition hopes to provide an opportunity for the public to reflect on their respective identities in relation to their surroundings.
